Boosting the Immune System

The immune system is responsible for the defense of the body against invaders such as viruses, bacteria, and foreign bodies. The main function of the immune system is to detect and then destroy the above pathogens as well as to excrete damaged and modified cells.

The factors that negatively affect the defense of the organism are overweight, smoking, lack of sleep, lack of sun, hygiene, and malnutrition.

The immune system is divided into two main subsystems:

  1. The endocrine or innate immune system is based on cells that do not need to mature in order to function such as basophils, monocytes, natural killer cells (NK) and a protein complex which are known as the complement system.
  2. The adaptive or acquired immune system is composed of T lymphocytes (which help other lymphocytes to function or destroy other cells) and B lymphocytes (which produce antibodies or globulins). These two types of cells have to mature in order not to recognize and not affect the healthy cells of our body.

Animal studies show that spirulina can trigger several functions of their immune system including the phagocytes from macrophages 1 32 33, the production of cytokine 25and chemokines 9 and other substances required for inflammation, the reactivity of NK 33 cells as well as the production of antibodies by B lymphocytes 11 and proliferation of T lymphocytes.

On the other hand, spirulina seems to repress inflammatory reactions in rheumatic arthritis, colitis, and severe allergic reactions 38 45. This shows the significant and pivotal role of spirulina in our immune system as it boosts immunity and simultaneously protects it.

As far as the impacts of spirulina on the immune system, from a few pieces of research that have been published, it seems that it can potentially have an important role in the control of the immune system 14.

The action of Spiroulina PLATENSIS is also important against the Coronavirus (SARS COV19). World First Clinical Study carried out at the Department of Pathology of the Naval Hospital of Crete by Drs. Ilias E. Mazokopaki & Dr. Maria G. Papadomanolaki & published in the European Journal of Medical and Health Sciences [2022; 4(3), 82-83] highlights the contribution of Spiroulina PLATENSIS to the prevention & treatment of COVID-19. Read more here.

Spiroulina PLATENSIS, in order to protect the organism against pathogens it is enriched in the following nutrients:

      • Phycocyanin, an antioxidant substance that can find in food. Because of her, the organism is protected against viruses.
      • B-carotene, which recognizes and destroys microbes and other damaged cells
      • Vitamin E. which is a strong antioxidant factor that protects cells from reactive oxygen species.
      • Zinc and selenium, which produce red blood cells that are required for defending against pathogens.

Spiroulina PLATENSIS contributes to an enriched immune system always without affecting the organism with synthetics and calories. Lastly, the intake of spiroulina PLATENSIS, in case of a disease, promotes the healing process.
