Antivirus Effects

Virus have as genetic code either DNA or RNA.
They are endocytic parasites that replicate in host cells by using their enzymes. During replication process they damage the host cells. When viruses infect and damage many cells, they cause a disease known as virus diseases.

Some widely known virus disease are:

  • Seasonal influenza
  • Common cold (reovirus)
  • Chicken pox (VZV)
  • Herpes (HPV)
  • AIDS (HIV)

Treatment for virus diseases:

  • Through vaccination that boost the immune system against infection and are the first line of defence
  • Antivirus substances which are considered the second line of defence

Pivotal role in virus treatments is the boosting of the immune system which can be achieved by consuming food enriched in antioxidants and vitamins such as fruits, vegetables, nuts etc. Consuming food with high protein content (as meat, fish, eggs and dairy products) is more than necessary. 50
Several in vitro studies that have used cyanobacteria have shown that cyanobacteria can act as antivirus substances.

Specifically, laboratory studies proved that Spiroulina PLATENSIS has an inhibitory action against the proliferation of Herpes Simplex Virus type 1.10

Additional studies have shown that spirulina has health benefits against:

  • Human Cytomegalovirus (HCMV)4 12
  • Measles virus 4 12
  • Mumps virus 4 12
  • Influenza virus A 4 12
  • HIV known for causing AIDS and enterovirus (Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome) 3 4 12 20 40.

Spirulina’s antivirus action is possibly due to a substance which prevents the virus from entering and infecting the cell in cooperation with other not known polysaccharides and protein contents. 4.

In a recent scientific article published in a prestige medical journal it is mentioned, among others, spirulina’s role in COVID treatment and seasonal flu. 51
The artificial colour phycocyanobilin/ PCB, that is mainly found in spirulina, represses the complex enzyme NADPH oxidase known as respiratory burst or oxidative burst, responsible for causing oxidative stress (overproduction of reactive oxygen species) in the virus of epithelial cells in the lungs as well as phagocytes.
By repressing NADPH oxidase, the stimulating action of the TLR7 receptor is activated which is found in the membrane of damaged cells and it causes production of interferons type 1 and antivirus antibodies which are important for the defence of the organism. Recommended daily dosage is 15g of spirulina.
